The York Munch was originally created by gemini and Paul, a local couple, in March 2001. Paul and gemini hoped to follow along similar ethics to the successful BDSM Manchester Community munch that they were members of. The York munch was originally held in the Bay Horse Pub, on Gillygate, and was well attended during the first few months - in particular with much support from the Manchester BDSM'ers.
However, due to personal reasons, gemini moved away around June 2001, and Johnxb (one of the local attendees) volunteered to organise the night. Johnxb ran the event until the end of 2001 when lori (a regular of the munch) then took over. Attendance at this point had declined - perhaps due to the poorer weather and the other perve friendly localish events and clubs that had also been created.
lori continued to run the munch from North Yorkshire for the next six months until moving to York. Advertisement and word of month helped to significantly increase the attendance. Much help was given from August 2002 by her fiance Abraxas, and other regulars (including again Paul, one of the original founders). The Bay Horse closed for refurbishment at the end of March 2003, and the munch relocated to its present venue at The Winning Post from April 2003. A career move in May 2003 meant that the running of the munch has passed over to Zak (a regular attendee). Increased attendance & Zak's work commitments meant that help was required in ensuring York achieved it's aim of establishing itself as "one of the best" munches around. As such your York Munch management team consists of the lovely Gemma & our own version of Statler and Waldorf - Jay & Zak ;-)
Over the last 7 years York munch has established a reputation as a very friendly and lively venue, with approximately 30 - 40 people turning up each month, the most we ever had at a regular munch night was 76! Many of the attendees are 'regulars' each month and make a special effort to put any new people at ease. Regular attendees travel from Scarborough and Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, Newcastle, Teeside & Durham in the North East, Sheffield, Chesterfield, and of course York, Harrogate, Leeds and other local areas. We have also had visitors from as far afield as London, Manchester, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Cheshire, Wales, Ireland, USA & Australia!
Zak introduced a programme of munch demos inviting guest speakers to make a small presentation on a wide range of topics including Body Art, Corset making, a Fetish Fashion show, Photograhy, as well as brief overviews of BDSM equipment & their use. In addition there have been fun nights featuring games or a quiz. All of these featues take up just a small part of the evening with the main focus being the ability to relax & chat with friends old & new.
